The community meeting "Employment Opportunities in the City of Slavonski Brod” was held on 30 May 2016 at the community building near the Roma settlement in Slavonski Brod.
Guests of the community meeting were Mr. Zeljko Balikic, representative of the Croatian Employment Service (CES), Regional Office Slavonski Brod and Ms. Nikolina Bilic, employee of the Department of Economy of the City Slavonski Brod.
In her presentation, Ms. Bilic stressed that the City is currently implementing two projects of employment intended for Roma population. The first project "Roma for Roma" is being implemented with the help of the CES by carrying out the measure of public work through which 20 Roma will be employed. The second project is the program of extended stay in the elementary school Hugo Badalic, within which one teacher and two Roma assistants are employed. Ms. Bilic noted that the City is currently developing a project documentation for the development of the local community building in the Roma settlement.
Mr. Balikic also commented on the measure of public work carried out in cooperation with the City and through which 20 Roma will be employed. He informed the attendees with a stimulating measure of self – employment and urged those present to contact them for help if they have a desire to open businesses. He noted that currently they have offers to work in construction and a competition for employment in a ship's company was recently opened. Participants were also informed about the possibility of professional development for people who have completed high school. He added that one of the measures offered through CES is training for certain scarce occupations. The problem faced by members of the Roma community is associated with lack of education. The vast majority of older Roma have not completed primary school which is a prerequisite for any retraining. All participants were invited to complete their primary education through public universities.
Community meeting was attended by 22 residents who were active in asking questions and in seeking advice from guests.
The meeting was also attended by the local media who reported about the event.
The event was held within the project "Legal inclusion and sustainable integration of Roma in Croatia", which is financed by the European Union under the program IPA 2012 "Strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations to ensure the effective implementation of EU standards in the realization of human rights" and co-financed by the Government Office for Cooperation with NGOs.
